Footwear for Unpredictable Weather

The daily discrepancies in weather don’t just play havoc with your hair this season (hello permanant frizz!), as your wardrobe takes a trans-seasonal hit of infuriating proportions.

Torrential downpour at 9am, scorching sunshine at 1pm? Sounds about right for this so-called summer we’re having. A mountain of layers and tights whipped off a lunch has been the unofficial fashion trend of the summer; but beyond the summer dresses and umbrellas is the issue of footwear.

Peep-toe, platform, ballet flat or brogue, no matter what your choice of shoe, if the weather turns nasty you’ll find yourself with damp feet quicker than you can say soggy socks. In the same sense there’s nothing worse than sporting boots on a summer’s day; sweaty feet are no one’s friend. With no end in sight for our unpredictable weather, times call for some emergency shopping and the 411 on weather-proof footwear.

These popular flats have risen up the ranks to be the next-best-thing to ballet pumps. Favoured by Alexa Chung and Kirsten Dunst, boyish style brogues have earned they’re sartorial street cred. Deemed as the ballet flat gone bad, I’ll be adding these glitter Topshop brogues to my shopping list for a bit of glam and boyish charm (a top trend for AW11, I’ll have you know). Brogues are perfect for uncertain weather days; a flat heel means there’s no hassel in dashing inbetween raindrops and come sunshine they are a cool, updated version of ballet flats. We love you Kate Moss (pioneer of the ballet flat) but your day’s at French Sole are numbered.

A good pair of boots can last a life-time and this is no truer than with these Kurt Geiger Chelsea boots. Chelsea boots are the new boot to be wearing, leave your cowboy boots at home (…or drop them off at Oxfam). Paired with summer dresses Chelsea boots give you an indie edge, whilst tucking in a pair of denim jeans does everyday dressing with ease. They suit everyone, promise, and they are weather appropriate come rain or shine. Get them in leather to avoid rain-sploshed suede and being a short ankle boot means plenty of pretty leg is on show if the weather is nice…for once.

Sturdy enough for dodging puddles, stack heels are the go-to essential for those of you wanting to stay in your heels way into winter. The stiletto has had its day, as platform pumps and the worthy stack heel take centre stage. These colour block beauties from ASOS hit two trends in one; bright colour and chunky heels. Now, who doesn’t love a bit of multi-tasking? These heels are sure to keep you out of any deep puddles and the patent style will stay waterproof; just wipe away any rain stains. Team them with bright contrasting tights when it gets chilly or ankle socks for summer.

So there you have it, my top three coveted footwear options for fickle weather and all occasions. These shoes are great for moving into A/W, without a damp sock in sight! Shoes are always the trickest item to buy when the weather starts to turn and trans-seasonal trends kick in. A good pair can have you hitting all the right fashion notes; perfect for staying footloose and fancy free this coming season.
