Fans of the ‘Gears of War’ X-box computer games will be familiar with the Carmine family. However if like me you are not, a brief explanation is definitely in order. One Carmine brother has been killed in each version of ‘Gears of War’ – Anthony in the first version, then little brother Ben in Gears of War 2. However the makers of Gears of War 3 found a novel way to leave the life of brother number 3, Clayton Carmine, in the hands of X-box fans.
Clayton’s fate now depends on the amount of virtual T-shirts that have been sold via Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Having started on July 29 two t-shirts became up for grabs – one shirt reading “Save Carmine” and the other “Carmine Must Die.” While purchasing the T-shirts contributed to the poll deciding Clayton’s fate, the T-shirts also helped to raise money for the charity Child’s Play. Over $150,000 was raised for the gaming industry charity which is dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games throughout their network of over 60 hospitals worldwide.
It seems the power of a printed T-shirt has now spread into the virtual world. Though the T-shirts couldn’t even be worn, they still managed to raise a fantastic sum for charity. Clayton’s fate will only be revealed with the release of the trilogy finale, “Gear of War 3,” on April 5, 2011.
